Are the majority of women out there now a days more materialistic and vain?

Will women not date or show any love to a fat guy even if he is sweet and kind and supporting, and will more then likely go for the guy that is more ecstatically pleasing? I Ask because I had a discussion with some people in class and the majority of women said " I look for the inner-quality of a guy, not his look." And five guys in class yelled. " Bull Crap!" then two other women told me after class That they made some bad choices by picking the good looking jerk.
